Mashiko Pottery
Mashiko is a town in Tochigi prefecture known for its pottery, called Mashiko-ware (益子焼). There are about 400 pottery studios and kilns in Mashiko.
Although Mashiko pottery is often thought of as simple and rustic with brown and a little red glaze, modern pottery made in Mashiko today can be found in many styles on account of the creative freedom brought to Mashiko by the potter Shoji Hamada, he was known as the first Japanese potter to have a kiln in St Ives Cornwall. Shoji Hamada made a great connection between Japan and the U.K.
Our beautiful pottery are made by Takuya Kawajiri, a potter in Mashiko.
He makes such beautiful tea pots, coffee cups, plates, spoons and lots more.
He has a kiln and his studio on top of a hill overlooking Mashiko town. He uses local soil and wood waste from local construction sites as an eco conscious way to source his materials.
Add a little bit of Japanese beauty to your everyday life!
